Kyle McGuire

UX Designer and UI Engineer

Employment

Palo Alto Networks, Senior Principal UX Designer

After the Palo Alto Networks acquired Expanse, I have continued to work on Expanse products as we integrated our offerings into the wider PANW platform. I designed a variety of flagship features including an executive command center, the Cortex Vulnerability Risk Score system, and the Vulnerability Management module interfaces.

Additional projects included design work on product features specifically targeted at the specialized needs of our US civilian and defense government customers representing ~$50m in annual recurring revenue.

I also focused on mentoring and developing mature critique and open feedback processes and teaching other designers on the team about the technical underpinnings of our products and how those details related to delivering an excellent user experience.

Expanse Inc, Senior Principal UX Designer

At Expanse I worked as a user experience designer and engineer. I joined the company as the second design hire and helped drive its growth from 40 people and 4 customers to 150+ people and 100s of customers, including major Fortune 500 enterprises in technology, banking, and retail, and US government agencies, both civilian and defense. I designed and shipped features including the Vulnerability Issues experiences and policy engine, search and filtering capabilites, asset management experiences, and internal tooling that powered the company's market-redefining ability to discover shadow IT and unknown-unknonw vulnerabilites. As an early employee of a startup I closely collaborated with both product managers and engineering teams, and acted as a defacto product manager for some of the areas I contributed to as the company grew.

Although focused primarily on product design and engineering, I also provided engineering and design support to sales and marketing to ensure company growth and help land large sales opportunities. The company doubled our annual recurring revenue year over year for four years and was acquired by Palo Alto Networks in December 2020 for $800 million.

Cloudmark, UX/UI Designer & Engineer

At Cloudmark I designed and developed euser interfaces for both customer-facing web applications and internal technical tools — taking them from business requirements, to mockups, to production ready code. I was the lead user experience designer and a senior web engineer working on Cloudmark Trident (cloud-based anti-spearphishing) and Cloudmark Security Platform (carrier-grade messaging infrastructure protection). I contributed to the design of and review internal and customer-facing REST APIs, and have completed lead capture tool integration and major corporate website redesign projects on behalf of the marketing team. I worked closely with product managers, back-end, test, and ops engineers on all of these projects during all phases of our planning/development/testing/deployment sprints.

Technologies utilized: backbone.js, require.js, node.js, d3.js, docker, nginx, SASS/SCSS, SVG, JSON REST APIs, RAML, Redis, git/gitlab, svn, Confluence, JIRA, Symfony2 framework, YAML, PHP, jQuery, Google Analytics, vSphere

  • Trident qualified for inclusion in Gartner’s “Cool Vendor” award in 2016.

Apigee, UI Engineer

At Apigee I paired closely with the User Experience and PM teams to implement their designs as html5/css3/Backbone.js web apps. Contributions include a JS management app for Apigee’s cloud-based API services platform, evaluating designs for technical feasibility and functionality, an internal dev portal site, illustrating platform systems, customizing Twitter Bootstrap for company branding, creating a set of Illustrator resources to allow the team to design quickly.
